Campaigners lose battle to buy Pump Field in hard-fought auction

* The auctioneer's catalogue picture of Pump Field.

A campaign group has been unsuccessful in their campaign to save a popular Llangollen field from possible future development.

After an intense three-hour round of vying for highest price by two anonymous bidders at an online auction today (Tuesday) the 4.65-acre Pump Field off Grange Road eventually sold for £113,000.

And that was just too much for the Llangollen Green Spaces action group which was formed to spearhead fundraising and buy the land to secure it for the community into the future and the Green Paw Project which was backing them to tune of £50,000.

On their own account the group raised almost £18,000 in just a few days on crowdfunding which won support from both the area's Conservative MP and Labour MS.

The Jones Peckover auctioneer's catalogue said: "The sale of Pump Field provides a rare opportunity to acquire a useful parcel of agricultural land extending to about 4.65 acres, currently laid to pasture and suitable for a range of agricultural, equine or amenity uses (subject to any necessary consents).

"The land occupies a picturesque setting on the South side of Llangollen with views towards Castle Dinas Bran. it is set out in one enclosure and enjoys vehicular access and good road frontage onto Grange Road."

Online bidding opened at £48,000 at 10.34am today with three bidders in the contest.

With just Bidders 2 and 3 staying the course, the price rose rapidly as they made a total of 59 bids between them.

By 1.31pm when the auction closed Bidder 2 was winner with an offer of £113,000.

Action group spokesperson Sarah Marshall said: "I am letting all our generous supporters know that the Auction for Pump Field closed at 3pm today and the final price was above what we were able to bid, so we were not successful on this occasion.

"People have been so generous in their donations and support, we really want to thank everyone for their community spirit and efforts to secure a beautiful green space for public use.

"It's been heartwarming to see the number of donations, whether large or small it has all been really appreciated as we know people have given what they can.

"Please do not continue to donate. The crowd-funder has a minimum open period until 27th May so we need to wait until after then but the auction is now closed.

"We ask for you to bear with us whilst we sort the logistics of closing the crowd-funder page, we will be updating as to final amounts that were raised and pledged in the coming days.

"Llangollen Green Spaces will continue to work to protect our beautiful green spaces and improve biodiversity in the local area and look forward to future projects."

Beacon lighting in Denbighshire for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Denbighshire is holding a beacon lighting event to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The free event will take place at Rhyl Events Area on Thursday, June 2, between 9pm – 10pm.

The beacon lighting will be part of 1,500 events taking place throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen becoming the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, and to mark this historic 70-year reign.

Denbighshire County Council will be helping celebrate the Queen’s remarkable 70-year reign with this free event for members of the public, with no booking required.

To coincide with the lighting of the Beacon, all present will be invited to join in to sing the ‘Song for the Commonwealth – A Life Lived with Grace’ which won the Commonwealth-wide song competition and further details can be found at www.commonwealthresounds.com

Ample car parking is available in Rhyl for the Beacon lighting, but the closest car parks to the Events Arena are the Central Car Park, Sky Tower Car Park, and Pavilion Theatre Car Park, all located along West Parade, Rhyl.

Residents are reminded as this is a late evening, outdoor event, to remember to dress appropriately.

The council has also taken part in the Queen’s Green Canopy, a UK-wide, tree planting initiative created to mark the Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

The Jubilee Tree, was planted at Cae Ddol, Ruthin in March, by Denbighshire County Council’s Chairman Cllr Alan James.

The tree is a Black Poplar, a very rare tree, native to the river banks of the county.

As part of the celebrations, we have held competitions for schools, and 20 Denbighshire schools have participated in the various competitions, with 2,404 entries having been received over seven creative competitions which include flag designs, letter writing, poetry and baking.

The winners of all the school competitions will be announced via Twitter at @cyfoeth_enrich on Wednesday, May 18.

Llan woman will use pedal power to support sick children

* Jenny Coppock will take in the cycle challenge.

A woman from Llangollen will be amongst cyclists from across the region using pedal power to support seriously ill children this summer as the Hope House Cycle Challenge returns for the first time since 2019.

Hundreds of riders will take to the roads on Sunday, August 14, from Hope House in Oswestry and head on two routes to either 56 miles to Lake Vyrnwy or 70 miles to Lake Bala and back.

The longer Lake Bala route takes in Bwlch y Groes – one of the highest public road mountain passes in Wales with a summit altitude of 545 metres.

Cyclists will be provided with refreshments at the halfway feed station and treated to a delicious buffet upon return to Hope House. There will also be medical support on route as well as a bike doctor to keep cyclists safe.

One of those already signed up to take part is 36-year-old Jenny Coppock, from Llangollen, who is a member of the Wrecsam Tri triathlon group.

“I’ll be doing the Lake Bala ride, it’s one of the most scenic routes you can ride and I can’t wait to saddle up and get going,” she said.

“This is a really inclusive ride for riders of all sorts of abilities and everyone is really supportive. If you have a bike, get signed up and ride for an amazing cause.”

Due to the pandemic, the ride wasn’t able to be held for two years but is now finally back with a new bespoke medal for riders to add to their collection.

Fundraiser Bekki Fardoe said: “It’s going to be great to see all of our riders again here at Hope House and out on the route.

“We are so grateful to our sponsors The Fencing Bloke Ltd and Knight Frank for their incredible support in helping us be able to put on such an amazing event which will raise vital money to support children and families that need care at our hospices.

“The Cycle Challenge is one of our most popular events, so if you want to take part and make sure you get your hands on one of our incredible medals and one of our cycle jerseys then please do sign up early to avoid disappointment and take advantage of the early bird fee.”

* Sign up for the ride at www.hopehouse.org.uk/cycle and guarantee your place. It costs £25 to register in advance or £35 to register on the day and you must be over 16 to take part.

Campaigners raise almost half of money needed to save Pump Field

* Action group members and supporters on Pump Meadow yesterday.

In just a couple of days the action group aiming to prevent a popular open space being sold for development have used crowdfunding to raise almost half of the £30,000 they reckon is needed to buy it themselves ahead of its auctioning off tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon.

Pump Field is nearly five acres of meadow, nicknamed “buttercup meadow” by many due to it’s summertime flowers.

It is an open space used by many locals and in COVID restrictions especially it provided a perfect outdoor meeting place close to the town but away from more crowded areas. In winter it’s a popular place for families to go sledging.

An action group named Llangollen Green Spaces formed to spearhead fundraising and buy the land to secure it for the community into the future.

The group’s vision is to “safeguard green spaces in and around Llangollen for public access and community use and to improve biodiversity”.

Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon more than 20 people turned up at the field to plan the campaign.

Group spokesperson Sarah Marshall said: "We have now raised nearly half the amount needed on Crowdfunder in only a couple days, so that’s thanks to people of Llangollen.

"We we also have some reasonably substantial pledges outside of the Crowdfunder as some people are happier to do that.

"Among those who have made pledges are the local MP Simon Baynes and Senedd Member Ken Skates."

She added: "Our aims are to protect Pump Field from property development, secure it for public use and enhance the area for biodiversity and food production.

"The Green Paw project have already pledged £50,000 (the auction starting price) for this land, any funds raised will be additional to help improve our chances.

"Green Paw will put up a maximum bid up to whatever money has been pledged on this Crowdfunder (and private pledges) at the auction start time.

"If we are not successful at auction 100% of the money will be fully refunded. In the event of us winning the bid at auction, any additional funds will be put into a pot for the social and ecological development of the land as outlined below.

"People are asked to contact info@greenpawproject.org directly if they would like to discuss donating via a pledge that's only enacted if the bid is successful.

“We don’t have much time to secure this field for the town, as bidding closes at 3pm tomorrow. We have tried contacting the owner for more time and we set up crowd-funding for a collective bid in order to try and prevent it being developed, as so much of the land around the town recently has.

"Local people need outdoor places to exercise, play and relax, and we really don’t have many open spaces like this within walking distance. We are also applying to register the paths across the field as public rights of way. Anyone who may be able to help is welcome to make contact."

Green Paw Project spokesperson Ste Chesters said: “We would love to work with the community in Llangollen to secure a future for this land that keeps it accessible and showcases a regenerative approach to land management."

As of this afternoon (Monday) a total of £13,435 had been pledged, with Simon Baynes down for £50 and Ken Skates £40. An anonymous donor pledged £2,000 while a number of people have signed for £1,000 apiece.

Mega prize attracts world’s best young singers to Wales

* 2019 winner Erin Rossington.

Twenty-four of the world’s best young singers will be vying for a prestigious international prize at this summer's Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

Competitors from as far afield as China, America, Spain, Latvia and Estonia will be battling for the title of Pendine International Voice of the Future at the festival.

The contest will be one of the highlights during the 75th anniversary event which get underway on Thursday, July 7.

The popular festival had to be cancelled in 2020 for the only time since its inauguration in 1947 due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

In 2021 it took on a virtual format with performances streamed online but this year the music and dance extravaganza is back in the town where “Wales welcomes the world”.

Organisers were blown away” by the exceptional standard of entries in the Pendine International Voice of the Future competition, sponsored by the Pendine Park care group via the Pendine Arts and Community Trust (PACT) which supports arts and community activities.

The near-record 38 entrants have been whittled down to 24 singers who will have to navigate two premliminary rounds and a semi-final before the three finalists compete on the famous International Pavilion stage on Saturday, July 9.

Competitors are required to perform a contrasting programme of up to seven minutes in length for their preliminary round and up to 10 minutes for the final.

The winner will be presented with the Pendine Trophy, a solid silver salver, and a cheque for £3,000 as well as having the opportunity to perform in concerts at the Eisteddfod and other venues. Meanwhile, the runner up will receive £1,500.

Pendine Park proprietor Mario Kreft MBE said: "The ethos of the Eisteddfod chimes perfectly with the values of my wife, Gill, and I at Pendine Park in nurturing young talent.

“We firmly believe in the vital role played by music and arts in social care and as part of our enrichment programme for people with dementia.

“The Pendine Trophy, which is solid Edwardian silver bearing a Chester hallmark, was kindly donated by the late Tony Kaye of Kaye’s Jewellers. It’s a stunning and beautiful trophy.

“It’s wonderful that, after the nightmare of the past two years, this fantastic festival is back with competitors returning to Llangollen for the first time since 2019.

He added: “Llangollen Eisteddfod was founded as a beacon of hope in the aftermath of the Second World War.

“The message about the importance of peace and harmony is as relevant today as it's ever been, especially with the war that’s being waged by Russia against Ukraine.”

The festival’s executive producer, Camilla King, said: The standard of the competitors this year is absolutely phenomenal. The choice is so difficult for the adjudicators as the singers are all so extraordinarily accomplished.

“I used to be a casting manager with English National Opera so I have had lots of experience of sitting in on vocal auditions over the years and I can categorically say we have some truly fine entrants among our 2022 competitors. A number of them genuinely are the stars of years to come.”

Soprano Erin Rossington, 25, was triumphant in 2019 and she said winning the title was a huge boost for her fledgling singing career.

Erin, originally from Llanfairtalhaiarn, near Abergele, is now in her third year of studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

She said: “Winning the Pendine Voice of the Future competition has gone a long way towards helping me to achieve my dream of becoming a professional opera singer.

“The prize money enabled me financially to take that important step of going to live in London and work my way through music school.

Entries have now closed for all the Eisteddfod competitions and organisers are delighted that the numbers are more than expected given the difficulties faced by performing artists over the last two years.

Performers are expected from up to 25 different countries, with about 30 overseas groups and 23 overseas soloists, 31 UK groups and 45 UK soloists.

Camilla King added: “When you consider all that has happened with the pandemic, the cost of living and economic crises, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, travel limitations in various parts of the world, it is remarkable to think that our competitor numbers in all categories are so high.

“We are in for some great music. In fact, we have high hopes of 2022 being one of our best ever eisteddfods with the prospect of some truly memorable performances to come.”

Bus service is back to highlight wonders of Dee Valley

* The Picturesque Bus stops off at the Horseshoe Pass.

The Dee Valley Picturesque bus service is running again this year to provide access to some of the key destinations in this beautiful and historic landscape.

The service is a circular route running every Saturday from May until October 2022, and links Llangollen and the surrounding villages to popular local attractions including Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Wenffrwd Nature Reserve, Horseshoe Falls, Valle Crucis Abbey, Plas Newydd Historic House and the Horseshoe Pass.

The service will enable people to visit these key locations without the need of a car and reduce the need for parking spaces, making it easier for those without their own vehicle to access these places, and helping to reduce congestion at some of the busiest sites in the Dee Valley.

Service users can consider parking in some of the bigger car parks such as at Wenffrwd and hopping on the bus for a visit to some of the more crowded locations or for a longer linear walk.

A great option would be to park at the main Pontcysyllte Aqueduct Queen Street car park, Cefn Mawr, take the bus to Horseshoe Falls and walk back along the canal.

The service will also provide both visitors and local residents with the opportunity to explore the wider area.

The bus offers hop on/ hop off facility with a 1Bws ticket price allowing unlimited travel on the service through the day making it ideal for getting off to visit a site and then back on the bus later.

The service has been made possible thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales, and delivered in partnership by Denbighshire County Council and the Our Picturesque Landscape project, a landscape partnership scheme which is working to conserve and improve access to the inspiring landscapes of the Dee Valley and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site.

* For the full timetable and ticket prices for the Picturesque Bus service please see Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB website, Denbighshire bus timetable webpage, or pick up a leaflet from Llangollen Tourist Information Centre.

Residents rally to preserve Pump Meadow

Residents of Llangollen are concerned about the sale by auction of meadow land at the northern edge of town.

Pump Field is nearly five acres of beautiful meadow, nicknamed “buttercup meadow” by many due to it’s flowers in summertime.

It is an open space used by many locals and in COVID restrictions especially it provided a perfect outdoor meeting place close to the town but away from more crowded areas. In winter it’s a popular place for families to go sledging.

An action group named Llangollen Green Spaces has been formed to prioritise an effort to fundraise and buy the land to secure it for the community into the future.

The group’s vision is to “safeguard green spaces in and around Llangollen for public access and community use and to improve biodiversity”.

There will be a “Mid-May Midday” gathering on the field tomorrow (Sunday 15th May) on the last weekend that current access arrangements apply before the land sale.

The action group is encouraging people to show their support by bringing family and friends, with picnics, to the field from 12pm.

Their spokesperson Sarah Marshall said: “We don’t have much time to secure this field for the town, as bidding closes at 3pm on May 17th. We have tried contacting the owner for more time and we have set up crowd-funding for a collective bid in order to try and prevent it being developed, as so much of the land around the town recently has.

"Local people need outdoor places to exercise, play and relax, and we really don’t have many open spaces like this within walking distance. We are also applying to register the paths across the field as public rights of way. Anyone who may be able to help is welcome to make contact."

Ms Marshall said the charity Green Paw Project is working in partnership with Llangollen Green Spaces to buy Pump Field and develop it as a community asset.

Their spokesperson Ste Chesters said: “We would love to work with the community in Llangollen to secure a future for this land that keeps it accessible and showcases a regenerative approach to land management."

Big charity event makes urgent appeal for cake

* Challenge organisers are looking for bara brith and lots of other cakes.

Organisers of the 4th Llangollen Round Challenge, which takes place later this month in aid of Cancer Research, have put out an urgent appeal - please bake a cake for us!

They say: "We desperately need cake of all sorts, but particularly flat-bakes - flapjack, bara brith, banana bread, parkin, etc - to feed the 500 walkers on the challenge on May 28/29.

"The walkers get a small piece of cake at each of five checkpoints in the hills - that's  2,500 pieces of cake - and cake is also needed in the restaurant which they  and their supporters visit at the end of the walk.

"Any cake you bake will mean that we don't have to spend money that would otherwise have gone to Cancer Research UK, so we will be extremely grateful for anything you can offer.

"Please could you let us know as soon as possible (tel. 07905 330788 or email smithdinbren@gmail.com) what you are going to make so we can work out what we still need.

"Cakes can be brought to our campervan in East Street long-stay car park - look out for the flag - between 10am and 3pm on Thursday May 26, or we can collect them if that is difficult

"In advance, thank you so very much for your help."

Work planned for week ahead on 2020 project

Work planned for week starting May 9 on the town's 2022 project is:

  • Install guardrails during the day along Market Street and Mill Street
  • From Monday to Friday there will be night time (6pm to midnight) closures for the surfacing and bridge jointing works

A spokesperson for the challenge said: "We are fast approaching the entry limit for the 2022 Llangollen Round Challenge, so sadly booking must close at midnight on Sunday.

"Make sure you let any friends know not to leave it too late."

The spokesperson added: "We'll promise you magnificent scenery along the way and support in completing the course.

"The route will be waymarked and marshalled, with five checkpoints carrying water and light refreshments. Back at base there will be more food, certificates and medals for everyone.

"In line with last year we expect around 500 entrants."

Collen Players keep the audience buzzing with their latest show

* The whole cast say goodnight from the stage. All pictures by

Jeanette Robinson.

* Chairman Lee Taylor opens the show.

* Alison Jarvis presents her two numbers.

* Mike Connolly sings his powerful songs.

* Owen Roberts at the keyboard.

* Colin Bourdiec channels George Formby.

* Phil Robinson has the audience singing along.

* Louise Cielecki thrills with two show numbers.

* Colin Bourdiec returns with a music hall medley.

* Father Lee closes the show.

The Collen Players, joined by a special guest star, presented their latest old time music hall and variety show at the Community Hall last night (Friday).

It was the usual blend of top-class music, cheeky banter and sing-along song which audiences have come to love from the group over the past few years.

Peerless accompaniment came from Owen Roberts at the keyboard.

Following some quick-paced introductory patter from the chairman - as usual Father Lee Taylor - first up on the stage, which was dressed to evoke a gaslit Victorian music hall from the naughty 1890s, came the sweet-toned songstress Alison Jarvis who offered the appreciative crowd All the Nice Girls Love a Sailor and You Made Me Love You.

It was then the turn of Players regular Mike Connolly to present a pleasingly powerful When I Leave the World Behind followed by a stirring We'll Keep a Welcome (in the Hillside).

Then it was time for the evening's special guest, the highly talented Colin Bourdiec to deliver a brilliantly entertaining tribute to the late great music hall legend and variety icon George Formby, complete with the favourite When I'm Cleaning Windows.

After more warm-up material from the chairman to keep the audience buzzing, another Players regular Phil Robinson offered a pleasing When I Was 17 then You Are my Sunshine, his latter choice seeing the crowd keeping up the sing-along rhythm set by earlier acts.

Louise Cielecki, a former top performer with the Llangollen Young 'Uns now embarked on a successful professional stage career, first amused with Little Girls from the smash-hit show Annie then brought a tear to the eye with I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables.

Colin Bourdiec closed the show in style with a medley of period hits from the likes of Sir Harry Lauder and Bud Flannigan - a definite crowd pleaser of an act.

As has become traditional, the whole company assembled on stage to say a musical goodnight with two rousing choruses of Down at the Old Bull and Bush "Da, da, da, da, da".

Election results reveal Llangollen's two new county councillors

* The new County Cllr Karen Edwards.

* The new County Cllr Keddie.

Following yesterday's election Llangollen's two new county councillors are Karen Edwards and Paul Keddie, who both stood as Independent candidates.

Cllr Edwards, who is a former Llangollen town councillor, was elected with 626 votes and Cllr Keddie, who has also retained his seat on the town council, with 623.

Both will serve for five years until the next election.

Cllr Edwards said: "I would like to send my heartfelt thanks to everyone who voted for me. I will do my best to represent all the electorate in a fair and equal measure. Now the hard work begins."

Cllr Keddie said: "I’m incredibly honoured to have been elected alongside Cllr Karen Edwards.  We will be a strong Independent Voice for Llangollen and the surrounding villages.  I would like to wish the unsuccessful candidates well and will do my best to follow through with their goals, everyone had good plans.

"I will always put you, my friends and neighbours first.  I’d also like to thank formers councillors Melvyn Mile and Graham Timms for their staunch work for us over the years.

"I will support everybody - not just the people who voted for me."

Sarah Marshall said: "Firstly I want to congratulate Karen Edwards and Paul Keddie on their success.

"It is really encouraging that the Green Party had their best result yet in Llangollen elections for County Council, and also have won two seats in Denbighshire.

"This puts Climate and Environment issues firmly on the agenda for local politicians."

Stuart Davies, who was bidding for a return to the county council and served until the election as a town councillor, failed to be elected after recording 445 votes yesterday.

He contacted llanblogger to say: "My team and I fought a good fight but didn't make it. I will now gracefully retire from politics to make way for younger people and wish the area's two new county councillors the best of luck."

The remaining three candidates contesting the two local seats received the following number of votes:

Dawn Butters, Welsh Conservative - 130

Roger Jarvis, Welsh Conservative - 106

Sarah Marshall, Wales Green Party - 543

Full results

As only six candidates came forward for the 11 vacant seats on Llangollen Town Council no election was necessary yesterday.

The remaining five seats will therefore have to be filled by co-option following the election.

MS calls for tourism to get more Welsh Government support

* The Llangollen Canal is a top tourist attraction.

Sam Rowlands, Senedd Member for North Wales, has called on Welsh Government to give more support to the tourism sector.

Mr Rowlands, who is Shadow Minister for Local Government and chair of the Senedd’s Cross Party group on tourism, was commenting while closing a Conservative debate on tourism.

He said: “I would like to focus on three issues, first is the importance of tourism in Wales which welcomes around 100 million visits every single year. These are people coming to our great nation, spending their money, supporting local jobs and enjoying our spectacular attractions.

“The second point is the impact that COVID-19 had on our tourism sector here in Wales, with lockdowns and restrictions seeing a number of businesses shut down, whilst others struggled to stay afloat.

“The final point is the proposed changes from Welsh Government on the non-domestic rating system and taxation proposals, that will the impact many holiday letting businesses and livelihoods.

“We need to remember that now is the time to encourage enterprise and business here in Wales. We need to encourage people to visit Wales and spend their money in our businesses, sustaining those jobs and communities that are vitally important.

“Visitors to Wales spend significant sums and invest significantly in our country, benefiting our local economies, from hoteliers to restaurants, to those who run incredible attractions up and down Wales. Now is the time to celebrate this sector and appreciate that people from across the world come to choose Wales as a place to visit.”

New clinic at Wrexham Maelor aims to cut cancer waiting times

A specialist clinic will be created in Wrexham to cut cancer waiting times and help early diagnosis.

The news was confirmed by Welsh Government Health Minister Eluned Morgan and was immediately welcomed by local Members of the Senedd Ken Skates and Lesley Griffiths.

The new Rapid Diagnosis Centre at Wrexham Maelor Hospital will be one of three in north Wales and could help detect early signs of cancer before they develop further.

In response to a letter from Mr Skates, the MS for Clwyd South, the Minister said: “The introduction of RDCs is an important part of the national approach to improving cancer outcomes. RDCs provide GPs with an additional referral option when they suspect cancer, but the patient does not meet the criteria for a suspected cancer referral.”

She added: “I am pleased to confirm that one of the three RDCs being introduced in north Wales is at Ysbyty Wrexham Maelor.”

Mr Skates said: “This is excellent news for Wrexham. Rapid Diagnosis Centres part of a national programme supporting Welsh health boards to investigate often vague symptoms that may be caused by cancer, and can provide quick reassurance, help diagnose a range of other conditions and refer people on for cancer treatment more quickly if needed.

“One in two people are diagnosed with some form of cancer. I’m delighted that Wrexham will have its own innovative centre to help increase local capacity, speed up diagnosis and reduce anxiety for patients at what will be extremely worrying times in their lives.”

Member of the Senedd for Wrexham, Lesley Griffiths, said: “The Welsh Government is committed to supporting our NHS as it begins to deal with the effects of the pandemic and this latest announcement will certainly be welcomed by Wrexham residents.

“These new clinics aim to provide diagnosis quickly for patients across the region, allowing the appropriate treatments to start sooner and offering greater clarity, certainty and support to people during a particularly overwhelming and stressful period.”

The concept of RDCs was identified by the Wales Cancer Network and previously piloted through Welsh Government funding.

MP looks in at Llangollen gallery

* Simon Baynes MP with Suzanne Mathieson, owner of The Dory Gallery.

Clwyd South MP Simon Baynes visited the The Dory Gallery in Llangollen and met with the owner, Suzanne Mathieson.

The gallery officially opened in June 2021 and is an independent creative and cultural space, which aims to showcase the best in contemporary art within the local area.

Suzanne and her late partner, Dory Ross, moved to Llangollen in 2017 and took over the empty building in Regent Street, which was initially built in 1840 as a school for the poor, extended in 1870 and again in 1996 when it became the Health Centre for Llangollen.

However, in February 2020, Dory Ross passed away and Suzanne decided to officially open The Dory Gallery in his memory, to showcase his work and that of other local artists including Edward Bell, who is famous for designing a number of David Bowie’s album covers.

Suzanne said: “I feel very passionate about keeping the art gallery open, offering the local community access to contemporary artwork and invite everyone to come and experience this for free. I plan on hosting a variety of cultural events in this beautiful building, which will assist in keeping it sustainable.

“I am particularly keen on engaging with a younger audience, so will be partnering with Glyndwr University to support emerging artists at the beginning of their careers. I look forward to welcoming all!”

Simon Baynes said: “I was delighted to visit The Dory Gallery in Llangollen and to meet with Suzanne to see the brilliant exhibition space the gallery has to offer.

"I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dory Ross in 2020, but think that The Dory Gallery is a wonderful and fitting tribute to Dory and his paintings.

“I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Suzanne and would strongly recommend a visit to The Dory Gallery."
