Have your say on proposed new North East Wales National Park

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) are inviting feedback on an initial Area of Search map for a proposed new National Park in North East Wales.

And people in Llangollen, which is included in the plan, will get the chance to have their say, in person, tomorrow (Saturday, November 18) at the Town Hall between 10 and 4pm.

The engagement period will run until Monday November 27.

Welsh Government has commissioned NRW, as the Designating Authority in Wales, to evaluate the case for a new National Park based on the existing Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The case for the park will be considered within the existing Senedd term (2021-2026).

A questionnaire to capture feedback is now live on the project website. This can be accessed at: https://ymgynghori.cyfoethnaturiol.cymru/north-east-gogledd-ddwyrain/national-park-designation-project-engagement-2023

Ash Pearce, Project Manager, said: "We are engaging with local people and groups early in the project to ensure we can capture and understand all the issues and opportunities that relate to the proposed new National Park.

"We will consider and account for the feedback provided as we work through a series of technical assessments and prepare our informed recommendations.

"There will be a full public consultation on a proposed boundary in 2024. At this stage, we have identified an area to study and want to listen and understand the significant issues, opportunities and themes affecting the area.

"We warmly invite everyone interested in our work, to join us at one of a series of in-person and online engagement events over the next two months. Also most critically, to complete our questionnaire which will ensure that we can capture their feedback.

"The events will be an opportunity to learn more about the project, ask questions of the team and share feedback on an early map of the area being assessed.

"People will only need to attend one event, be that online or in-person as the information shared will be the same for each event."

The Llangollen engagement event is due to take place at the Town Hall on Saturday November 18, from 10am until 4pm.

People are encouraged to drop by at the in-person events, there is no need to book a place. If interested in taking part in one of the online events, email the project team at designated.landscapes.programme@naturalresourceswales.gov.uk with your name, state your interest (e.g. resident, community leader, landowner, farmer, business owner, organisation representative, etc) and which event you are interested in (the date). These will be bilingual events with simultaneous translation provided.

NRW have prepared procedural guidance setting out the statutory process that must be followed. It is evidence based and allows for engagement and consultation with statutory consultees, the public and other stakeholders.

Re-think of Four Great Highways scheme after tenders are over-budget

* Lower Dee Mill Park is part of the scheme.

The county council is having to re-think its plans for Llangollen's Four Great Highways scheme after tenders for the work came out over-budget.

The aim of the project is to enhance the landscape and improve accessibility, interpretation and signage in the town.

It is part of investment by the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund that was secured through a joint application between Denbighshire County Council and Wrexham County Borough Council for the Clwyd South Constituency.

The application was supported by Simon Baynes MP and £3.8 million was allocated to Denbighshire to invest in the communities of Llangollen, Llantysilio, Corwen and surrounding areas.

But Denbighshire says that due to the current market and general levels of construction inflation, all tenders submitted to undertake the work required to complete the current design proposals are "significantly over-budget".

The Four Great Highways Team are now looking to rescope the project as it is clear that all of the works currently being proposed for it will no longer be feasible as a result of these budget constraints.

While the council says it is disappointed with this development, it adds that the Project Team will ensure that the revised project will deliver the key elements and outcomes of the scheme to benefit to the local communities once completed.

Cllr Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment & Transport, said: “While we are disappointed that the original design proposals for this project are no longer practicable, we remain confident that we will deliver a worthwhile project that will be an asset to the local area once completed.”

The tendering process for the revised Four Great Highways project will open later this month.

MP in talks with council over support for Eisteddfod

Clwyd South MP Simon Baynes has revealed he has been in talks with Denbighshire County Council over additional support for Llangollen Eisteddfod.

The festival has partnered with promoters Cuffe and Taylor, which will see a number of high-profile musical acts travel to Llangollen for concerts before, during, and after the Eisteddfod.

As part of the deal, it has been announced that rock bands Manic Street Preachers and Suede will headline the 2024 Eisteddfod on Friday, June 28, with more acts to be announced over the coming weeks.

Prior to becoming the local MP Mr Baynes served on the Board of Trustees for the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod from 2017 to 2019.

Since his election, he has continued to maintain his interest in the Eisteddfod, both in his personal capacity and as MP.

Earlier this year, Mr Baynes was contacted by the Chair of the Board of Trustees, Sarah Ecob, regarding the future of the event.

This resulted in a meeting being arranged on Friday October 6 with the leader of Denbighshire County Council, Cllr Jason McLellan, and the Chief Executive of the Council, Graham Boase, to discuss additional support that could be offered to the Eisteddfod in light of the announcement of the partnership with Cuffe and Taylor.

Mr Baynes said: “I am delighted at the news that the Board of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod has agreed to partner with Cuffe and Taylor. The deal has already seen the announcement of two major headline acts for next year’s Eisteddfod, with further acts to be revealed over the coming weeks.

"As a former member of the Board of Trustees for the Eisteddfod, I have seen first-hand the dedication of those who help to make this event a success every year. In my role as the Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, I have had a number of discussions with the Chair of the Board, Sarah Ecob, with regards to the future of the event, with the most recent being attended by both the Leader of Denbighshire County Council and the Chief Executive.

"I look forward to continuing to liaise with all relevant parties over the coming months to ensure that the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is a success for years to come.”

Service for Baby Loss Awareness Week at St Collen's

A special Wave of Light service is to be held at St Collen's Church this Sunday (October 15) at 4pm to mark Baby Loss Awareness Week.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: "It’s all about raising awareness and breaking the silence on what people used to consider a ‘taboo’ topic.

"I know that baby loss has affected many local families, including my own, so it would be really good for families to know that their babies are not forgotten.

"The church will also be lit up to raise awareness and the service is for anyone who has a lost a baby in pregnancy, at birth or in the early years, whether the loss was yesterday or 80 years ago.

"There will be an opportunity to write names on the remembrance tree at the back of the church throughout Baby Loss Awareness Week and the church will be open every day from 10am-3.30pm."
