More acts announced for this summer's Fringe Festival

Two more acts have been announced for this year's Llangollen Fringe Festival. They are:

IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE

Fronted by Nigerian singer Eno Williams, Ibibio Sound Machine is a clash of African and electronic elements inspired in equal measure by the golden era of West-African funk & disco and modern post-punk and electro.

HANG MASSIVE

Since 2011 Hang Massive have shaped the global handpan music scene, pioneering a successful electronic act with a magnetizing live show.

Blending dream-like acoustic and upbeat electronic sounds, their unique style inspires a worldwide audience. 

Since then, this ground-breaking musical project has amassed millions of views online and a huge, global following.

Appearing July 13 Llangollen Town Hall. Doors open at 7:30 PM. Tickets are £25.

Weather-hit waste collections to take place next week

Denbighshire County Council has sent out a note about how the recent wintry weather has affected waste collection and recycling.

It says: "The recent winter weather has caused problems with recycling and refuse collections in: Llangollen (Thursday 9 March), Corwen (Friday 10 March), St Asaph (Friday 10 March). 

"Recycling and refuse collections will not take place over the weekend. 

"We will arrange collections for residents in those areas that haven’t had their waste and recycling collected, to take place during the week beginning Monday 13 March 2023."

Leisure firm adds more classes to popular Clubbercise programme

Denbighshire Leisure Ltd (DLL) is adding more classes to their hugely popular Clubbericse programme after a success launch across four sites. 

The success of Clubbercise at Ruthin and Nova has now led to DLL rolling out five Clubbercise classes at four of their venues. 

Waiting lists have been made for those unable to get on to the classes at Llangollen and Nova continues to  have classes sold out every week. 

With the strapline ‘Bringing a night out to your workout’, Clubbercise is a mix of fun and fitness. 

The full-body workout is aimed to suits all fitness levels. Set in a dark room with disco lights and Clubbercise glowsticks, each routine is accompanied by club anthems and 90’s classics. 

For those looking to ‘glow all night’ there are classes at Ruthin, Denbigh, Llangollen and Nova now available with DLL. 

These are all included in the DLL memberships and give members a chance to get fit while having fun every day of the week.

County council weather update

County Network Position and Weather Update; (Thursday 09 March 19:00hrs

Further heavy and significant snowfall is forecast through this evening and overnight, with no anticipated changes to the predicted accumulation levels already reported in the earlier update, although there is a possibility of increased accumulations at lower levels. In addition to the snow, icy conditions are also expected along with the potential for some freezing rain, leading to a risk of black ice and some potentially challenging conditions overnight and in the morning. The county road network continues to be largely passable with care. The Horseshoe Pass, Llangollen and Gwaenysgor Hill, Prestatyn are still currently closed.

 

DCC gritting teams will be working continuously through this evening and overnight to keep the primary network open and the teams will be salting all priority gritting routes. Agricultural snow plough contractors will also be deployed across the county again tomorrow, in order to assist our teams in dealing with the worst affected routes.

 

The weather on Friday is set to improve throughout the morning, with snow levels gradually decreasing but it will still remain very cold, and there will be only limited thawing and melting of any remaining lying snow. Friday night will again be a bitterly cold night, with temperatures expected to be well below freezing, and in some cases as low as between -6 to -8 Celsius across most parts of the county.

 

The Met Office amber warning is set to remain in force until 09:00 tomorrow, along with a wider yellow warning covering the whole of North and Mid Wales through until 14:00hrs tomorrow.

 

Looking ahead, a weather front is set introduce rain during the daytime on Saturday, although there is still the potential for this to turn to sleet/snow at for a time, before milder conditions set in. A further update will be provided tomorrow morning.

Hill Street junction roadworks will now go on for another week

* Work at the junction of Hill Street and the A5 will go on for another week.

Roadworks to improve the junction of Hill Street and the A5 in Llangollen will now take another week to complete, llanblogger has just discovered.

The project to upgrade the traffic lights and realign the junction, providing signals to the pedestrian crossing phase, began on January 9 and were originally due to be finished six weeks later on February 17.

But it was announced shortly before that date that they would actually run on until March 9 - this coming Thursday.

However, llanblogger thanks to Llangollen county councillor Karen Edwards, has now seen a copy of an official note by the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent (NMWTRA) that the work, being carried out by contractors A Parry Construction Ltd, will not now be completed until Thursday March 17.  

No reason is given in the note for the second extension to the deadline.

However, when the work was last extended the Trunk Road Agent said in a note to the county council that the extra time was needed "due to changes to the original NMWTRA scheme with the addition of Puffin Crossings, along with other unforeseen changes."

Teachers to tackle Llangollen Canal Walk in aid of hospice

A group of teaching staff from a Wrexham primary school are lacing up their walking books at taking on Hope House Children’s Hospice’s Llangollen Canal Walk this month. 

Six staff from Ysgol Sant Dunawd in Bangor-on-Dee will be taking on the 10-mile trek on Sunday, March 12 to help raise money for the hospice which cares for children and families in the area.  

Steven Jones, Martin Wyeth, Laura Hughes, Jane Parr, Laura Thomas and Sarah Hughes decided to raise money at the same time as bonding outside of school. 

Teaching Assistant Laura Thomas said: “We like to get together outside of work and we are a bit of a family here. 

“This walk has always looked really good, especially as it passes over the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and this year we decided we would take it on as a group and raise money for such an incredible local cause.  

“As a teaching staff we work with and are passionate about children so it felt it was fitting for us to help raise money to support local children too.” 

The group has so far raised more than £275 and are asking for anyone who would like to sponsor the walk to visit justgiving.com/fundraising/mark-wyeth1. 

Fundraiser Cat Dowdeswell recently gave an assembly to the children and staff to thank them for their fundraising efforts and explain more about the charity. 

She said: “We are so touched that the staff from Ysgol Sant Dunawd chose to support us by taking on our Llangollen Canal Walk. 

“Without the fantastic support of our local community and those taking part in our events we wouldn’t be able to be here for those seriously ill local children and their families when they need us the most.” 

The Llangollen Canal Walk has been sponsored by this year by Principality Building Society. 

James Harper, social impact lead at Principality said: “We’re proud to be sponsoring this amazing walk and raising money for such an important charity. We’ve got our hiking boots ready to join the walkers on the route, and our fingers crossed for dry weather.”
