Health centre's urgent vaccination message

Llangollen Health Centre has put out this urgent vaccination message:

County councillor gives background to heavy diversion traffic

* One of the diversion signs, at the lights on Castle Street.

One of Llangollen’s county councillors has revealed the assurances he sought from highways chiefs to prevent a major diversion through the town causing traffic chaos.

Two overnight closures of the A483 in both directions between the Chirk and Halton roundabouts from Thursday-Saturday, from 8pm until 6am, to allow essential repairs to the viaduct has led to traffic being diverted though Llangollen.

On the first night, last night, traffic was extremely heavy on the A5 and along Castle Street leading to complaints from residents.

Asked by llanblogger for his reaction to this, County Councillor Melvyn Mile revealed the contents of his email exchanges in advance of the works with national and local highways officials.

Writing first to the North & Mid-Wales Trunk Road Agency (NMWTRA), which is in charge of the operation, he said: “I’d like to point out that the last time the A483 was closed due to high winds, it caused total chaos in Llangollen.

“Presently we have temporary traffic lights on the A5 controlling an excavation just inside the town’s easterly limit, together with temporary lights on the main A5/Castle Street junction.

“You claim that the situation will be monitored, I hope that means men on the ground (Amberon or someone similar) ready to enforce a One-Way system if needs be from the Llangollen Health Centre to the east on the A539 to the old Ty’n y Wern hotel to the east on the A5. A loop of approximately 1 mile.

“The A539 is too narrow to allow two HGV’s to pass each other 100 metres to the east of Dee bridge in Llangollen. It caused much frustration and shows of bad temper at the previous closure.

“Two HGV’s using Castle St together means that the one heading north will have to mount the kerb.

“I appreciate that it’s being done overnight but there is still considerable traffic involved. You may think that I’m scaremongering but I saw the result of the last closure and believe me, I’m not.”

Replying to his concerns, Nia Louise Lennox of the NMWTRA said: “We are very aware of the traffic disruption that was caused when the two viaducts were recently closed due to strong winds.

“The works for each of the two overnight consecutive closures have been planned to ensure that the A483 can be re-opened to traffic before traffic volumes significantly increase in the early morning.

“It is expected that that A483 will be re-opened by 04.00 however a contingency of 2 hours has been allowed for to ensure the road is open by 06.00 as advertised. Over-night traffic volumes are much lower than daytime and morning peak traffic volumes.

“Therefore we do not expect significant disruption along the diversion route. Denbighshire Council Streetworks team have been consulted and are satisfied with the planned arrangements for implementing and the signing of the diversion route.

“The traffic management sub-contractor will be patrolling the diversion route throughout the period of the closure and will be ready to take action to alleviate any disruption that occurs under the direction of NMWTRA personnel who will be in attendance on site.

“The Viaduct is a vital piece of infrastructure. The integrity of the top slab supporting the carriageway has recently been compromised and urgent repairs are needed to prevent the void within the structure being flooded with surface water. The damaging effects of water penetration are accumulative and must be addressed as soon as possible and before the Trunk Road Summer embargo periods, hence the short notice period.”

And from Tony Ward, Denbighshire County Council;s Head of Highways, Facilities and Environmental Services, Cllr Mile received the message: “Having reviewed the narrow section of road east of the Ponsonby Arms on Street view we have decided to erect temporary traffic lights whilst the diversion is in place.

“We feel it’s a marginal decision given the expected light HGV flow over night but the down side risk created by erecting signals is small and is easily justified.

“We have also asked the TM contractor/designer to drive the route tomorrow morning to check the latest situation and to advise/discuss with us any other possible current and arising issues that we may be able to provide mitigation for.”

Cllr Mile told llanblogger: “I did everything I could to ensure traffic congestion caused by the roadworks would be minimised.”

Covid help group suspends its Facebook page as pandemic eases

Llangollen Coronavirus Help Group, which has helped mobilise the town’s community spirit since the earliest days of the pandemic, has suspended its popular Facebook page.

But the two town councillors who have been helping to run the group since last October, say the good work will continue in the background.

The page has just over 1,000 members and attracted hundreds of hits a day as it posted up-to-date information on the Covid-19 situation and co-ordinated the efforts of an army of volunteers to help with such things as the delivery of food, prescriptions and newspapers to those self isolating.

Now the woman who started the page and the group whose name it bears has taken to social media to explain why she is placing the page in suspension.

Cat Meade, who juggled her full-time job at Wingetts estate agents while running the group with dedicated volunteers, says: “As we are slowly progressing forward we have agreed to suspend this page, I am hoping this will be my last post to you all, it will stay just in case, however be inactive.

“The past 14 or so months have tried and tested us all, as individuals, families, businesses and the loss some have suffered. The overwhelming support Llangollen has benefited from its residents is outstanding, and I hope not to be forgotten.

“An army of volunteers, businesses accommodating to home deliveries, services as and when needed, and the great team of admins on here to keep you all posted on developments. Far too many to mention as the post would need 6 pages to list all.

“I personally would like to thank EVERY ONE of you for volunteering, supporting, to all those local businesses that have gone above and beyond in their commitment to our community.

“I (and am sure the rest of you will agree) had no idea what length of support would be needed from March last year! We got through it together, as a community, looking out for one another.

“There are still areas in need, Foodshare and the community I and others are still assisting with food and hot cooked meals, a big thank you to the Llangollen Inner Wheel ladies who are supporting weekly and if you can please assist with items to Llangollen Food Share which will be an ongoing service.

“Again, thank you to you all, you are all amazing.”

Town mayor Councillor Austin Cheminais and his colleague Cllr John Palmer took over the main running of the coronavirus help group last autumn.

Cllr Cheminais said: “Our main contact is usually by phone. The majority of residents we’ve helped in the past now seem to have the support of neighbours, friends, relatives.

“John Palmer and I continue to maintain a data base of volunteers prepared to help others.

“We’ve largely wound down but have kept our list of volunteers and are still getting very occasional requests for help, usually shopping. The Rotary through Sheena Burrell are still collecting and delivering prescriptions.

“We will continue to be here if anyone who asks but as people are returning to work etc our group of volunteers is likely to shrink.

“In an  emergency we can help people with shopping and can arrange for regular contact for those who live alone or just need someone to talk to.”

First piece of rolling stock leaves Llangollen Railway for new home

UPDATE ...

Another heritage coach was trailered away from Llangollen Railway just before noon today (Thursday).

It was a privately-owned GWR auto coach being moved to a new base by it owner.

It is understood that a locomotive and a kitchen coach belonging to the same owner will also be leaving the site soon.

* The buffet coach on a low loader at the M25 service station.

The first significant piece of rolling stock from crisis-hit Llangollen Railway has left the site.

One of the heritage attraction’s most iconic items, its 1960s-built buffet coach, was sold ahead of the current online auction of assets by special arrangement with the liquidators.

It was snapped up for £33,000 by the Spa Valley Railway in Kent and taken away from the Llangollen shunting yard by low loader earlier this week.

It was photographed by a railway enthusiast in the Clacketts service area on the M25 with its long journey to a new home almost complete.

The RMC 1864 coach was built by British Rail in 1962 as a restaurant miniature buffet and ran on the mainline network before being acquired by Llangollen Railway.

In March 1 the railway's Public Limited Company went into receivership with debts of around £350,000.

Since then the assets of the railway have been offered on an online auction, which culminates on May 12.

In the meantime, the separate Trust Board, which remains completely solvent, has been battling to raise enough money to buy as many of the assets as possible and get the railway back on track.

In a recent statement the board said it had completed a deal with the administrators to purchase certain assets belonging to the railway along with the right to use the railway line for an undisclosed sum.

It added that talks have been started with the Welsh Government, Business Wales, Denbighshire County Council and the National Heritage Lottery Fund, all of which had been positive.

It says it is targeting the end of July or early August for re-opening the railway to passengers.

And as fundraising continues the board says £100,000 approximately is needed to cover necessary overheads for the re-opening phase, for which it hopes to attract grant funding.

* To donate to the railway appeal online go to: https://llangollenrailway.enthuse.com and click the Donate button, or via our Facebook page. For taxpayers, the railway can apply for 25% Gift Aid. Alternatively, supporters are invited to send cheques payable to Llangollen Railway Trust Ltd to The Station, Abbey Road, Llangollen LL20 8SN.

Petition calls for linking Llan railway with mainline network

* The online petition started by Daniel Newton.

An online petition has been started calling on Wales’ First Minister Mark Drakeford to support the re-opening of a railway line from Ruabon to link Llangollen and Corwen, and potentially Bala, all back to the mainline rail network.

On change.org Daniel Newton of Rhosllanerchrugog says he is seeking political backing for the idea which he claims would benefit the local economy.

In the preamble to the petition, which has so far drawn over 60 supporting names of its 100-name target, he adds that his plan would also secure the long-term future of the existing Llangollen Railway as well as significantly enhancing public transport into all of the local areas.

He explains: “The wonderfully refurbished and preserved Llangollen steam railway provides spectacular scenic views for all tourists to enjoy; but with Llangollen Railway PLC having gone into receivership in March 2021, and a rescue plan via the Trust and a "Potential Buyer" currently being negotiated, and reported in the local papers and Welsh news (and with all the nationwide debate over HS2 being built in England and nothing being invested to extend the Welsh railway network to embrace the likely very positive effect of HS2's national economic growth potential), the time and public awareness and profile of the existing Llangollen-Corwen railway and the need for railway re-openings nationally is very high; and so therefore this is the very best time ever to start pushing for a wider railway reopening from Ruabon to link Llangollen and Corwen, and potentially Bala, all back to the mainline railway network.

“For a Ruabon to Llangollen mainline railway reopening, this would be anticipated to have a strong positive business case to benefit the local economy.

“If the Llangollen Railway could become a Community Railway Partnership with Gwynedd, Denbighshire and Wrexham Councils, then it could form a section of a reopened mainline railway route through from Ruabon to Bala via Corwen.

“This would link the corridor of Llangollen, Corwen, and Bala to the mainline railway network; benefiting the communities, businesses, tourism, and existing Heritage Railway attractions along the route (and could potentially link up with the Bala Lake Narrow Gauge Railway and perhaps in much longer term even a connection from the Ffestiniog and Blaenau area, via the Bala to Blaenau Ffestiniog route).

“Therefore, we believe that obtaining the political backing and funding to secure and protect the whole of the Ruabon to Bala route, reopen the existing Llangollen Railway as a Community Railway Partnership line, and to then restore a railway over the 5 mile disused track bed towards the main line in Ruabon, and longer term restore the remaining 10 mile rail route from Corwen towards Bala, would greatly secure the long-term future of the existing Llangollen Railway as well as significantly enhancing public transport into all of the local areas on the route in the Dee valley and Vale of Edyrnion, re-connecting all the towns and villages giving local people better access to the outside world, jobs, education, and also helping to bring in more tourists than possible by road to further boost the local economy.”

Major amendments to marriage law now in place

Amendments to the Marriage Act 1949 came in to force yesterday (May 4) which means for the first time since records began in 1837, the marriage register will no longer be the legal record for civil marriage in England and Wales.

The marriage register has been replaced and couples will now sign a marriage schedule.

Gareth Owens, Chief Officer Governance for neighbouring Flintshire County Council, said; “This is the most significant change in civil registration since 1837 and the Registration Service is delighted to be part of this exciting change.

“The Registrar will be responsible for a new marriage schedule and after a marriage ceremony will record the details on an electronic system, creating the legal record and allowing for marriage certificates to be printed.  The electronic register will be secure, more efficient for keeping marriage records and it will also allow mothers details to be included on the marriage entry rather than just father."

Couples who have given their Notice of Marriage for marriage ceremonies after 4 May, 2021 will have the option to include all four parents’ details at the time of their ceremony.  The Registration Service will assist couples prior to their ceremony.

Entertainer Shea is to make his TV acting debut

* Shea Ferron is making his TV acting debut.

Talented teenage entertainer Shea Ferron, who has rapidly proved himself as an impressive singer, has now turned his hand to TV acting.

Shea has been rapidly building up a useful portfolio of acting and singing appearances in the area for a number of years.

He has joined the cast of numerous shows, with Llangollen Operatic Society, its junior section the Young ‘Uns, and the Collen Players music hall group, winning a number of amateur stage awards into the bargain.

There have also been numerous solo performances in St Collen’s Church and his own church in Ruabon.

But Shea has really came into his own during the pandemic when by singing his way through a series of self-arranged open-air gigs to raise thousands of pounds for good causes.

Now he’s delighted about landing his first paid acting job but because of the nature of the business he’s been sworn to secrecy about the details.

All he could reveal on his social media page was: “Confirmed for a TV series opportunity filming in North Wales.”

He added: “It was my first acting job having joined JZee Leeming Model and Casting Agency back in March 2020.

“It was a supporting actor role in an upcoming TV series that I think is airing later this year.

“I can’t give too much detail away as I would get into trouble.”

Time to cast your vote in two elections this Thursday

Instead of casting their votes in the town hall as usual, Llangollen electors are being asked to use ballot boxes set up in the International Pavilion when they make their choice in this Thursday's two elections.

The change has come about due to the pandemic, with the pavilion being judged to provide more space for the necessary social distancing.

As another anti-Covid measure voters are also being encouraged to bring along their own pen or pencil to make their marks on the ballot papers for the Senedd and the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner.

The polling station will be open from 7am-10pm.

There are seven candidates lining up to contest the Clwyd South Senedd seat which has been held by Welsh Labour's Ken Skates since 2011. His majority has been 13% in the last two Senedd elections.

The full list of candidates is:

Jeanette Stefani Bassford-Barton, UKIP

Leena Farhat, Lib Dems

Llyr Gruffydd, Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales

Jonathon Andrew Harrington, Abolish The Welsh Assembly Party

Barbara Hughes, Conservatives

Mandy Jones, Reform UK

Ken Skates, Labour

The remaining 20 Senedd Members for North Wales are made up from the five larger Welsh Senedd voting regions which elect four MSs each in a proportional vote system – taking into account the number of constituencies already won in the region.

Police and Crime Commissioner election

The election for the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner will also be held this Thursday.

Here is the list of declared candidates in the election, in alphabetical order by surname:

  • Pat Astbury - Conservative
  • Andy Dunbobbin - Labour
  • Ann Griffith - Plaid Cymru
  • Lisa Wilkins - Liberal Democrat
  • Mark Young - Independent

Among the COVID-19 measures set to be in place at polling stations will be:

  • Separate entrances and exits where possible
  • At some polling stations, a door manager will be in attendance to ensure that social distancing can be maintained at all times
  • Altered layouts to allow for social distancing when waiting to vote and when completing a ballot paper, but still ensuring electors can cast their vote in secret
  • Polling station staff wearing PPE
  • Voters encouraged to bring their own pen or pencil
  • Polling booths regularly sanitised.
  • In addition, voters are asked to wear a face covering and ensure that only two voters enter a polling station at a time, while maintaining a safe distance throughout their visit.

Family of eisteddfod journalist raise £8,000 for NHS

* With Kevin’s wife Sally and eldest son Andy Hughes are ICU senior sisters Jayne Galante, left, and Joanne Richards. Picture by Mandy Jones Photography.

The family of a former journalist who covered the Llangollen Eisteddfod and died of Covid-19 have presented a cheque for £8,000 to the hospital which cared for him in his final days.

While in intensive care at Wrexham Maelor Hospital Kevin Hughes, 63, from Gwernymynydd, near Mold, who was also a Flintshire councillor, pleaded passionately with people to stick to the rules to stop the spread of the deadly virus.

But the father-of-three, a former police officer and weekly newspaper editor, died on January 8.

Son Andy – often accompanied by brothers Chris and Steve – raised £7,767 for the unit by walking 5k a day until the funeral.

Andy and his mum, Kevin’s wife, Sally, visited the hospital to hand of the cheque to staff.

He said: “We’re hoping that not many more families will have to go through what we have had to.

“I messaged my dad on December 15 to say that as he was on the mend I was going to do a 5k walk every day to raise money for the hospital until he was fit enough to walk with me.

“Sadly, that never happened but I carried on walking with my brothers until after our dad’s funeral on January 22 – it was to reward the fantastic team at the ICU at the Maelor Hospital.

“We simply can’t thank them enough for the support they gave him. They’ve been fantastic and tried every last thing.”

The cheque was presented to ICU Senior Sisters Jayne Galante and Joanne Richards and Jayne said: “Kevin was very passionate about Covid and was interviewed on TV while he was with us.

“He very much wanted to keep people safe and the need for them to obey the Government guidelines and stay at home.

“It’s a very cruel disease. You think people are improving and suddenly they deteriorate very quickly.

“It has now reduced a lot compared to earlier in the year. It’s calmer on the ward now but still very intense.”

Kevin and Sally were married for over 40 years and had seven grandchildren and she said: “This is part of what Kevin would have wanted us to do.

“The staff at the Maelor Hospital did such a wonderful job and every time I spoke to Kevin he would talk about the fantastic job they were doing.”

Andy intends to carry on fund-raising in memory of his dad who had a remarkable career as police officer, including as a police diver, and after leaving Cheshire Constabulary he worked as head diver at the Blue Planet aquarium at Ellesmere Port.

He then tried his hand at journalism and quickly rose to be editor of the Flintshire Chronicle and then worked as a freelance for Public Relations company Ceidiog Communication and stood as a Flintshire councillor and won the Gwernymynydd and Nercwys Ward.

While with Ceidiog Communication he covered Llangollen Eisteddfod for news outlets across the world.

He was a keen football fan, for his native Chester and latterly as a season ticket holder at Premier League Aston Villa.

The family’s fund-raising efforts are due to continue with the three brothers planning a long-distance walk from Mold to Aston Villa’s Villa Park ground in Birmingham and back.

Andy, who is stand for his father’s seat on Flintshire County Council, added: “We have had messages of support from all over the world, including Hawaii, the USA and Holland and a lovely personal letter from Dean Smith, the Aston Villa manager whose own father died from Covid.

“Dad’s season ticket was close to the dugout so Dean Smith must have heard from him quite often over the last couple of seasons.”
