County will keep vital part of street open to allow people to vote

The county council has answered concerns that the overnight closure of Castle Street would make it difficult for some people to vote in tomorrow's election.

The main street is currently being completely shut between 6pm and midnight each night to allow work to go ahead on the 2020 project.

This has led to fears that people living on the south side of the river would be unable to reach the polling station, which is at the International Pavilion off Abbey Road, tomorrow evening.

But asked about this by llanblogger a spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council said: “Essential night works being carried out as part of the Llangollen 2020 project will be amended on Thursday, May 5.

"This is to ensure residents in Llangollen are able to continue to access the polling station at Llangollen Pavilion from the south side of the town.

“The only section of Castle Street that will be closed on Thursday evening will be the section between Parade Street and Market Street. Castle Street northbound traffic will be diverted via Market Street, East Street and Parade Street back onto Castle Street.

“Traffic approaching Llangollen from the A542 Abbey Road and the A539 Mill Street directions heading in a southerly direction will be allowed to cross the bridge, but will then be directed onto Bridge Street.

“Traffic marshals will be on hand at this junction with Castle Street to guide all large vehicles and HGVs to follow the diversion route.”

Stuart Davies, who is standing as an Independent in the contest for the Llangollen county council seats tomorrow, said he was not happy with the way the matter has been handled.

He said: "I'm not happy at all as the voting process is being interfered with by the road closure of Castle Street, which means traffic being diverted up Bridge Street from the A539, including HGVs."
