- ONS has today published weekly figures for the number
of provisional deaths in England and Wales and an analysis of deaths from
coronavirus between March and May in England and Wales.
- The analysis shows nine out of 10 people who died from
coronavirus had at least one underlying condition – dementia and
Alzheimer’s disease were the most common.
- When age is taken into account, the rate of deaths in
this period due to coronavirus was 210.3 per 100,000 people in England
and 193.3 per 100,000 people in Wales.

- ONS’ weekly report shows the provisional number of
deaths from all causes registered in Welsh residents in the week ending
12 June was 574 – this was 126 fewer than the previous week and 14 fewer
than the five-year average. This is the first time since mid-March that
weekly deaths have been below average.
- Of the deaths registered in the week ending 12 June,
there were provisionally 57 deaths involving coronavirus in Wales. This
was 10% of all deaths, and 43 fewer than the previous week. The number of
weekly registered deaths involving coronavirus has fallen for the past
seven weeks and is now at its lowest level since the end of March. ONS
figures are different to those published by Public Health Wales as they
include all deaths in all settings.

- Public Health Wales has today confirmed 98 new cases of
coronavirus in Wales, bringing the total number to 15,295, although the
actual number will be higher.
o Sadly, there were five further deaths of people with
confirmed coronavirus reported by Public Health Wales today, bringing the total
reported by Public Health Wales to 1,483.
