Talented athlete scheme gets on its marks

A scheme to provide grants to talented athletes in Denbighshire is being officially launched.
The grant is available for those Denbighshire residents who have reached, or have the potential to reach the following standards:
County Level: Athletes who attend county or local authority level squads or attend national governing body centres of local development.
Regional Level: Athletes who attend or train with regional squads run by NGB’s, or athletes who are ranked individually in their sport with the potential to progress to the national squad.
National Level:Individual athletes that compete at, or are invited to attend national squad training sessions run by their NGB or Welsh Schools Association.
The level of grant aid for individual athletes in each category in any one financial year will be £100 for county level, £250 for regional level and £600 for the national standard.
Councillor Huw Jones, Cabinet Lead Member with responsibility for Leisure, said: “We are delighted to be officially launching the Talented Athletes Scheme at a time when there is very much a focus on sports, health and fitness in the wake of the build up to the Olympic Games.
“There are plenty of leisure opportunities for young people in Denbighshire to learn their sport, but these grants are available to those individuals who show the commitment and dedication to reaching the top of their chosen sport”.
